How to Become a Lash Tech (Even with No Experience!) – 3 Beginner Must-Knows

Thinking About Becoming a Lash Tech? Here’s What Every Beginner Needs to Know!

Have you ever looked at a lash tech working their magic and thought, “Could I do that?”

If you’re new to the world of lash extensions (or just curious about how it all works), you’re in the right place!

Whether you’re thinking about training for a side hustle, a full-time career, or just want a skill that gives you flexibility and freedom, becoming a lash tech is an amazing choice.

But let’s get real—when you’re starting out, it can feel overwhelming. Tweezers, glue, isolation… where do you even begin?! 😅

That’s why I wanted to share three absolute game-changer tips that will make your lash journey so much easier as a beginner.

1. Isolation Is EVERYTHING!

Ever watched a lash tech work? You’ve probably noticed that they spend a LOT of time separating individual lashes before applying an extension. That’s because good isolation = amazing retention (AKA how long the lashes stay on!).

Without proper isolation? Lashes stick together, retention suffers, and clients won’t get the results they’re expecting. It can also cause a whole host of other problems.
With good isolation? Each lash gets the perfect extension, creating a perfect, long-lasting set.

💡 Beginner tip: If you’re struggling, try adjusting your hand position or using aided isolation to gently move the lashes apart. It takes practice, but once you nail it, everything else gets easier!

2. Less Glue = Better Retention

One of the biggest mistakes beginner lash techs make? Too much glue!

It might seem like using more adhesive will make the extensions last longer, but it actually does the opposite. Too much glue can:
🚫 Cause stickies (where lashes clump together)
🚫 Make the lashes look bulky and can be uncomfortable for your client.
🚫 Lead to poor retention (because the glue doesn’t bond properly)

✅ We personally love using LashBase adhesives because they’re designed for both beginners and advanced lash techs. A tiny dip is all you need for the perfect bond—trust me, less is more!

3. Practice Makes Perfect (Even Without a Model!)

No models? No Problem! There are lots of ways to work on your skills.

Top ways to build your skills before working on real clients:
✔️ Use a practice mannequin head to get comfortable with placement
✔️ Try a lash sponge to work on precision and control
✔️ Practice isolation techniques with your tweezers daily—muscle memory is key!

Even 15 minutes a day can make a HUGE difference in your confidence and technique.
